Last week, the Huffington Post published an article discussing the efforts that companies are putting forth to design algorithms – what’s increasingly known as artificial intelligence – to create customized web design. The article and the general underlying topic are new evolutions in the old question of whether it’s better to take this sort of task upon oneself or spend the money to hire a web design company.

As the tools available to site owners become more sophisticated, answering that question becomes more complicated. This seems to come across in the Huffington Post article, which addresses serious advantages and serious drawbacks for the technology that is being developed today.

On the one hand, the use of website builders like Grid and Wix ADI saves on the cost of having everything done from scratch. On the other hand, those tools have received mixed reviews and tend to totally eschew input from users who would otherwise have a collaborative relationship with their local web design company.

On the one hand, web design AI draws upon tremendous amount of information to determine what works for certain categories of users. On the other hand, it effectively prevents the resulting websites from showcasing creativity and distinction, or to otherwise elaborate upon what has gone before.

Naturally, I still come down on the side of the argument that says today’s AI still can’t hold a candle to human expertise and adaptability. But that’s not to say that I’m not sensitive to the benefits of web building tools, especially the prospect of saving on the potential costs involved in starting from scratch.

But with that in mind, I feel it’s important to remember that choosing between a local web design company and an artificial intelligence does not need to be an all-or-nothing proposition. There’s something to be said for using low-cost AI tools to get a basic framework for your website and then passing the work on to a local web design company in order to touch up the paint, so to speak. In fact, if you contact a Los Angeles web design firm and discuss your plans with them, they ought to be both able and willing to do that for you.
